Steward Baylor Battles to the Podium at The Old Gray GNCC

Rocky Mountain Red Bear Kawasaki Team Green set out for Round 6 of the Progressive Grand National Cross Country series in Monterey, Tennessee, determined to bounce back with strong results.

In the pre-race meeting, Josh Toth was recognized by GNCC officials with the Sportsmanship award for sacrificing his own race at the previous GNCC in Kentucky to stop and help a downed rider.

In the XC1 Class, Steward Baylor made it through a chaotic start on the front row to enter the woods in the fifth-place position. From there, he wasted no time in starting his charge to the front of the pack and led the field across the line on the opening lap. Baylor remained in control for much of the day, but ultimately crossed the finish line in second place, on the rear wheel of the leader. The pass for the lead came into contention with an official protest on behalf of the team, but officials ruled the results stand as scored.

At the beginning of the XC1 race, Toth wasn’t as lucky as his teammate at the start. Fellow Kawasaki rider Grant Baylor made contact with another rider that put him on the ground. Toth got caught up in the incident and was hit by another rider from behind, breaking off his right foot peg in the process. Toth rode the best he could with one leg on the machine until getting into the pits for a replacement. He would finish his day 11th in the XC1 Class.

Next up, the team heads to St. Clairsville, Ohio, for the Powerline Park GNCC on May 17.
